Who: Jesmyn Ward
What: American Author, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing
When: In 2011, Ward won the National Book Award for her second novel, Salvage the Bones
Where: Ward grew up in DeLisle, Mississippi and received an MFA from the University of Michigan.
Why: In addition to being a National Book Award winner for fiction, Ward was a Black Caucus of the ALA Honor Award recipient and a finalist for both the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and the Virginia Commonwealth University Cabell First Novelist Award.
